It is a new year and with that comes such promises as healthier habits, depleting the clutter in our lives, and learning new things. I thought it would be appropriate to add one more resolution to this list: getting a dog!
That’s right; if you are still on the fence about bringing a furry friend into your life or home, here are 10 reasons why 2022 should be the year to do so:
1) Dogs bring joy
Let’s start at the very basic reason why we love dogs so much. They make us happy!
I know, it seems simple but thinks about all the times you have walked into a room with your dog and how uplifted you feel. You smile more often when your pup is around. They are always happy to see you and never judge! This alone is worth adding a dog to your life in my opinion.
2) Dogs lower stress levels
Did you know that belly rubs are one of the best forms of treatment for an anxious or stressed-out individual? That’s right, dogs make us relax after a long day at work.
With all the stressors coming our way on an almost daily basis, wouldn’t it be nice to come home to something that just loves you unconditionally? Not only do they love you, but also they want to show it. *wiggles eyebrows*
3) Dogs encourage you to get out and explore
If you are anything like me, work can become routine and sometimes stressful. Sometimes I just need a change of scenery so my dog will gently nudge me to take her for a walk or run around the yard.
No matter where we live there is always something new to see outside! Since dogs love exploring as much as their humans do, planning these adventures together just became that much easier!
4) Dogs build your immune system
Okay, this one might sound super weird but think about it for a minute. You are more likely to practice good hygiene habits if you have a dog (for example, washing your hands more often).
Also, dogs are amazing at identifying when something is wrong with you or if you are not feeling yourself. They will constantly be there to encourage you to take care of your health by getting fresh air and exercise.
5) Dogs provide an instant support system
If you are ever feeling down or unsure about life, simply reach out for some cuddles with your pup. Dogs’ unconditional love can cheer up anyone!
It’s important to have a support system in place but why look further than the four-legged friends waiting patiently at home?
6) Dogs help build physical activity into our lives
Walking is great for both dog owners and their pups! Not only does it encourage healthy exercise but it is also great for the environment.
The more walking you do, the happier both you and your pup will be! With all this walking, exercise can easily become a habit which I think we could all use more of in our lives.
7) Dog owners are healthier
Did you know that dog walkers make roughly $600-$1000 extra per month? That’s right, walking dogs gives you an opportunity to restructure your income if needed.
Getting up every morning to take care of someone else is bound to have positive effects on any individual especially when that someone needs love and attention! Not only are they helping themself but their community as well by providing affordable service for those who may not be able to afford expensive dog walking rates.
8) Dogs are an instant conversation starter
If you are looking to meet new people but don’t know where to start, consider taking your pup out for a walk! Everyone loves dogs and will likely strike up a conversation with you about yours.
You never know who could become great friends or even business partners! It’s also worth mentioning that many jobs do not require you to be physically present so working from home may be the perfect opportunity for those who want to explore this option. Being able to work from anywhere is definitely something I would love to try one day.
9) Another great reason why dogs make the best pets
They love unconditionally regardless if their owners believe in an all-mighty power or not; they don’t care about our differences and love us all the same.
Pets of any kind are not only great sources of companionship but also an encouragement to embrace diversity! Not that I need pets to help me accept others, but it is definitely a bonus!
10) Dogs make people happy
This reason alone could be why dogs are called man’s best friends. Think about all the times you saw someone with their pup; didn’t everyone look like they were having the time of their lives?
Dogs put smiles on faces and can cheer up even the most grumpy individuals. They make every day better by bringing positivity into our lives. Keep in mind this list does not mean other animals cannot do these things as well, but I definitely want to encourage dog ownership!
Yes having a pet takes work and responsibility but the benefits far outweigh the challenges.
I can’t help but feel great about all of this since I have my own pup at home that encourages me to be the best version of myself every day! I’m sure she will continue to do so for many years ahead. She is currently five months old so this has only been her doing these things since the beginning of our relationship which makes it even more special.
Dogs are truly amazing creatures with so much love to give to those willing to receive it! Thank you Arctic Dawg for reminding us how important these cuddly canines are in our lives. Now go treat yourself to some cuddle time with your pup!
